St. Mark’s has a partnership relationship with the Episcopal Church of the Guardian Angel in the impoverished Baltimore neighborhood of Remington. We support them financially each month, we provide food on a year-round basis, we hold an annual coat drive, we help stock their thrift store, and we participate in such events as the distribution of school supplies each fall, the Thanksgiving supper and Christmas Gifts for Parents program.
Our relationship with the community at Guardian Angel is an important ministry and one where many members of St. Mark’s have an active role. If you are searching for a way to give back to the wider community, there is a place for you in this ministry.
Backpacks for Guardian Angel
Summer is in full swing, and that means it’s BACKPACK time! Church of the Guardian Angel, St. Mark’s, Highland, and St. Andrew’s, Glenwood, will work together to help make this a successful year for the students in the Remington Community.
Supplies ordered from the Amazon Wish List will be delivered to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 2892 Route 97, Glenwood, MD 21738. Supplies purchased from other sources can be delivered to St. Mark’s Parish House, 12701 Hall Shop Road, Highland, MD 20777.
The backpack packing & pizza party is scheduled for Wednesday, August 12 at 6:30 p.m. at St Andrew’s. Backpack distribution day at Church of the Guardian Angel will be on Saturday, August 15.
Church of the Guardian Angel’s goal is to provide 100 backpacks to students in the Remington Community. Can you help? Read on to see how!
Amazon List
The Amazon list below is for supplies we hope to buy in bulk. In an effort to ensure we can fill as many backpacks as possible, and that we are being good stewards of our resources, we have looked for the highest quality at the lowest price possible. Click on “Amazon Shopping List” below to be taken to the Guardian Angel Back to School list.

Notes about this list:
It would be very helpful if you could purchase from the list and ship directly to St. Andrew’s, Glenwood. If you choose not to buy online or from Amazon, please buy exactly the same product (i.e., Crayola crayons, Bic pens, etc.) as what’s on the list, and email Diane Roca dbroca@comcast.net, to let her know what you’ve bought (this step is very important, so we don’t have overage in any one category!). Please bring your contributions to church no later than Sunday, August 2nd, so we can take inventory, fill in the gaps, and deliver to St. Andrew’s.
Financial Donations
If you would like to contribute financially, please make sure you indicate “G.A. Back to School” in the memo of your check and place it in the offering plate.
Bags for Supplies
We have found that it is efficient to pack supplies in reusable grocery bags. St. Andrew’s has enough on hand for this year.
The Classroom
For some items, it’s easier to provide the classroom with supplies instead of the individual student. Please see the list below of items you can purchase anywhere and bring to a Sunday Service or drop off at the Parish House between now and August 11.
- large bottles of hand sanitizer
- small bottles of hand sanitizer (refillable)
- large boxes of tissues
- any size bottles of anti-bacterial soap
- boxes of Ziploc bags – sandwich size
- boxes of Ziploc bags – gallon size
- anti-bacterial wipes (Clorox, Lysol, etc.)
- copy paper
Clothing
The neighborhood school, Margaret Brent Elementary and Middle School, requires uniforms: khaki skirts and pants, plain navy shirts (no lettering, logos, or pictures) with or without a collar. All sizes are useful and appreciated, as well as underwear and socks in all sizes for both boys and girls.
In Closing
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Through your generosity and the partnership amongst St. Mark’s, Highland, St. Andrew’s, Glenwood, and Church of the Guardian Angel, Baltimore, we can help students in the Remington community be as successful as possible in their school year without having to worry about whether or not they have the basics.
